Hans Zatzka
The time of the long 19th century was marked by a cultural upheaval. Manufacturers sneaked into the landscape and through the transport system experienced a revolution. In conservative Vienna, this change was progressing slowly. The art was still characterized by the love for the Old Masters, but got impulses from the well-off educated middle classes. Hans Zatzka followed this change and developed from a church painter to an artist for the rooms of civil society. The artist became famous for his genre pictures, his allegories with the religious and mystical scenes. But he also created a variety of landscapes and still lifes from nature. Completely and yet with great talent executed, he created images for the bourgeois society and for the less well-placed paintings in a small format, suitable for the small spaces of the working class.
Master of church painting
As the son of a tree master, Hans got early insight into the design of church ceilings and altarpieces. His first commission for a ceiling painting was given to the young artist for the Kurhaus Baden. To this day, the casino graces the source nymph Hygieia as well as Cupids, which form a seasons race. This was followed by the mural "The Last Judgment" in the monastery church in Vienna and assignments, which he carried out in collaboration with his father.
The Viennese painter
In the Viennese art scene of the expiring century, a flow developed that dealt with the painting of beautiful women. The representation of women in art was not new. Added is a new femininity. Zatzka chose his wife and two daughters as models for his canvas prints of female beauties. The painter never made sketches, nor did he draw. He created his works out of hand and chose unusual formats and oval bases.
Bedroom pictures
With the advent of printing technology, the so-called bedroom pictures became popular. As oil pressure, the salacious images found their way into the private spaces, turning away the widespread idea of morality and aesthetics. "The worshiper" brings a hitherto unfamiliar sexuality into the art. Buying copies allows the masses to acquire pictures. The painter receives editions from the publisher, which limits his image sales. Zatzka signs his works in this with different synonyms to get around the limitation.
The influence of culture
With the changed cultural values, the motif choice in the painting experienced a change. The educational aspect gained in importance and topics from music and literature replaced religious topics. Zatzka took part in this change and created canvas prints based on Wagner operas and the stage literature of great writers. He dedicated a painting to Shakespeare's Othello, whose Desdemona corresponds to contemporary beauty.
