John William Waterhouse
The paintings of the British artist are influenced by the content of the Pre-Raphaelites and technically influenced by Impressionism. The mythical and literary themes of a decaying artistic style are interwoven with the brushstroke and the sketchy paint of the contemporaries Waterhouse. In England, which was still Victorian, the artist developed his own style of art with Italian roots. With richness of color and motifs from the world of narratives and legends, the artist painted detailed pictures. The consummate fineness of Old Master replaced John with the Impressionist play of light. The connection to the popular literature in England helped the painter for social approval.
The sleep and death
Born into an artistic household, the young painter followed his father's example and began studying at the Royal Academy in London. The artist studied sculpting for the first few years and later switched to painting. His first canvas painting, "Sleep and His Half-Brother Death," was published by Waterhouse in 1874 at the Academy. Sleep becomes a recurrent theme in the artist's depictions. The poet Tennyson provided the inspiration for the painting "Saint Cecilia." The sleeping beauty is accompanied by the poppy, the symbol of sleep and its attributes.
Waterhouse and mythology
The artist regularly portrayed motifs from the world of legends. Focusing on the figure of women, they dominate art with femininity and enrich the images with their beauty. Lamia, the daughter of Poseidon springs from the Greek mythology. Based on a poem by Keats, a work was created with one by Lamia, which is wrapped in a snake skin. The beautiful face is deceptive and hides a femme fatal. "The Mermaid" is a dark poetry interpretation that tells of the loneliness of a mermaid. A seductive, single figure sitting in a bay in the world where she can not survive.
Between reality and fantasy
The famous British artist has created with his pictures a home in which feel fairies, witches and sorceresses. The painter succeeded in the conversion of figures from the literature and gave beings, without relation to the real life a face on his canvas pictures. The study for the sorceress is full of grace and lightness, at the same time it shows the merged painting styles.
